The work of twentieth-century French philosopher Michel Foucault has increasingly influenced the study of politics. This influence has mainly been via concepts he developed in particular historical studies that have been taken up as analytical tools; “governmentality” and ”biopower” are the most prominent of these. More broadly, Foucault developed a radical new conception of social power as forming strategies embodying intentions of their own, above those of individuals engaged in them; individuals for Foucault are as much products of as participants in games of power.

The question of Foucault’s overall political stance remains hotly contested. What Is the Future of Test-Based Teacher Evaluation?

Despite the lack of evidence for tying teacher evaluation to student test scores, despite the hundreds of millions spent to implement it without success, this is Arne Duncan’s line in the sand. He insists on mandated annual testing, because without it, his idea of teacher evaluation crashes. He doesn’t care that most teachers don’t teach tested subjects. It is not the annual tests he loves, it is the teacher grades based in annual test scores.

In this thoughtful article in Education Week, Alyson Klein explains the dilemma of states. They need an NCLB waiver, but to get it they must follow Duncan’s orders on teacher evaluation. If the new Congress reauthorizes NCLB, all of this might be swept away. So the US DOE is trying to lock states into plans that last until 2018, long after this administration is gone. Once Duncan is gone, most states will abandon his mandates…

In Scott Walker’s first budget in 2011, the one that included the notorious Act 10, which outlawed the formation of, and any substantive bargaining from, public employee unions, there was a proposal to split off UW-Madison from the UW System by making Madison a “public authority.” Back in 2011 plans for this separation of Madison from the UW System went so far that Biddy Martin, then UW-Madison Chancellor, had prepared the text for a new Chapter 37, which would apply only to UW-Madison and would govern it as a public authority that preserved all of the protections for academic freedom, faculty governance, and tenure that are written in to the Wisconsin Statutes. This 2011 proposal would have left the legal status of the rest of the System unchanged under Chapter 366, which lays out the statutory authority (and guidelines) for the University of Wisconsin System, the only university system…

Διαθεσιμότητες, απολύσεις, μειώσεις, ελλείμματα, ψευδο-αξιολογήσεις, γραφειοκρατική ασφυξία, το άγχος να καλυφθεί η περιβόητη διδακτέα ύλη. Και μαζί ο καθημερινός αγώνας στην τάξη. Μέσα στη διδακτική σχέση και για τη διδακτική σχέση. Όπου αρχίζουν όλα.

Η διδακτική σχέση είναι σχέση ενσώματη. Δεν περιορίζεται σε λόγια, αλλά περιλαμβάνει τον τόνο, την ένταση, το χρώμα και τους κυματισμούς της φωνής, το βλέμμα, το χαμόγελο, την έκφραση του προσώπου, τη χειρονομία, την κίνηση του σώματος ολόκληρου. Η κιμωλία και ο πίνακας είναι οργανική επέκταση των παραπάνω. Ακόμη κι αν -ή επειδή- είναι κακής ποιότητας και λερώνουν. Προτζέκτορες, επιδιασκόπια και λοιπά υποκατάστατα αποστειρώνουν τη διδακτική σχέση. Την εξαϋλώνουν τείνοντας τελικά να την καταργήσουν.

Η διδακτική σχέση είναι σχέση διακινδύνευσης και σχέση αναγνώρισης. Σχέση αμοιβαίας ενθάρρυνσης και αμοιβαίας κριτικής. Σχέση ευθύνης. Εκεί η αυτενέργεια αρθρώνεται με σεβασμό. Και, ως σχέση, ασκεί, δηλαδή διδάσκει έμπρακτα…

It is an interesting and important article for two main reasons: first it baldly acknowledges that the education system reproduces the aristocracy, and the second its diagnoses.  Let’s address these.

1. America’s Aristocratic Education

Now that might seem to be a “progressive” statement, but the reality is that this has always been the case.  In short, The Economist is using common knowledge (of what we already know) to open the ears of the dissidents, the ones who doubt the injustices of the system.

There is the global level, the national level, the local, and even the subjective (or personal) level.  From the global to the subjective levels many challenges obscure and undermine our collective ability to live well, to live in harmony with our environments, and even ourselves.

An example that connect us all together, universally, would include the environment.  The health of our world to sustain life is crucial to the very meaning of survival and flourishing.  But the ability to be part of decision making when it comes to planning out the health of our world’s environment is impossible for almost all of us, including experts and scientists.  This raises the question: Why is it that we are unable to voice our opinions on something so fundamental as the…

New York: Is This the Plan to End Public Education?

This is a startling blog post that has been going viral. It was written by Michael Lambert of the Gloversville Teachers Association. It warns that Governor Andrew Cuomo and Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch are together planning changes that would destroy public education in New York and end the careers of many teachers who ran afoul of the state’s evaluation requirements. Those evaluation requirements are based on value-added-measures that expert Audrey Amrein Beardsley recently described as «idiotic.»

Eric DeCarlo, president of the Scotia-Glenville Teachers Association, adapted it from a letter written by Mike Mosal, president of the Burnt Hills Teachers Association; these teachers work in small districts in upstate New York. The letter has been spread widely among teachers, parents, and community members upstate. Ric and Mike see the handwriting on the wall, and they think it is menacing.

«College and Career Ready», also known as Common Core Standards: Impossible assumptions and real sacrifices

Planning for college fills me with dread.

The financial reality is just too sobering. Even with the amount of money my husband and I are able to put aside for college, there’s absolutely no way our children can graduate from college without the accumulation of significant debt. A year of college at a state school runs around 25,000 dollars a year. Who has that kind of money?

My family isn’t the only one facing this dilemma. Most people I know are treading water financially, doing their best to make it paycheck to paycheck. Many lost their jobs from the 2008 crash. The economy may have recovered, but many of us haven’t. If there’s a little extra money at the end of two weeks, it goes for things like shoes, a coat or paying off the dentist. Saving for college isn’t on the radar.
